Dion Waiters Signs $2.9 Million Deal With Miami Heat

Dion Waiters Signs $2.9 Million Deal With Miami Heat

dion waiters

Dion Waiters has agreed to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder and signed a one-year deal worth $2.9 million with the Miami Heat’s Room Exception.

Also according to the report by the Associated Press, Waiters will be with the team for one year but will also be given the option for the second year, which will then bring up his salary to $6 million.

It seems to be part of the team’s campaign to replace Dwayne Wade, who joined the Bulls this summer. The Heat will now be facing the next season with Waiters, as well as Goran Dragic, Tyler Johnson and Josh Richardson.

Waiters definitely has yet to improve his game, especially after making several bad decisions on offense in the past as fourth overall pick with the Thunders but perhaps he will have better chemistry with the Heat, hopefully enough to make a much better impression and become a better on-ball defender.

Yao Ming Reveals Rockets Teammates Got His Name Wrong At First

Yao Ming Reveals Rockets Teammates Got His Name Wrong At First

yao ming sports illustrated cover 2003

Despite coming from a foreign country, Yao Ming quickly adjusted to American culture and got along very well with with players like Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley back when he was drafted in 2002. He’s now one of Houston Rockets’ greatest players and soon-to-be Hall of Famer.

But as it turns out, Yao’s adjustment wasn’t entirely easy. Heck, his players–and the rest of the world–have been calling him by the wrong name!

Yao shared in a lengthy article for The Players’ Tribune:

Steve [Francis] was the first person to greet me when I visited the arena. He walked across the locker room and gave me the hardest high five I’d ever felt. He put his entire body into it. You really could feel his muscle. My hand stung.

That was 14 years ago. Everything went so fast my rookie year, but I remember the first few weeks very clearly. You always remember first impressions. On that day, my coaches were showing me my new locker. I was so excited to see my name on my new Rockets jersey. That was a big thing for me because I had never had my name on a jersey before. There were a lot of big things that were different when I came to the NBA, but I remember the little things like that the most. For example, everyone called me “Yao” — they thought it was my first name. In China, our surnames come first and our given names last. To my Chinese friends, I was Ming. Now I was just Yao. Once everyone started saying it that way, I never corrected them. I was too shy.

In spite of this overlooked mistake, the Rockets clearly made an effort to make Yao (or Ming?) feel comfortable and even studied up on Chinese customs.

I didn’t know this at the time, but before I arrived, the Rockets had hired a Chinese professor from a local university to teach the team about Chinese customs. Everyone was so friendly and trying very hard to show me that they knew some things about Chinese culture. They showed me that they even knew little things, like how Chinese people hold a business card with two hands when we exchange it. I laugh when I think about it. At the time, all I wanted was for everyone to treat me the same as any other NBA player. But it was those small things that made me feel their warmth toward me.

And with that, we expect to hear good words for his teammates when he gives his speech in Springfield later this offseason.

Kevin Durant Still Using Oklahoma City Thunder Keychain

Kevin Durant Still Using Oklahoma City Thunder Keychain

kevin-durant-keychain

Someone seems to be having a hard time letting go… of an old keychain, that is.

Kevin Durant, who recently shocked the world about his decision to join the Golden State Warriors, has been super busy all summer, especially now that he’s preparing for the Rio Olympics. Too busy, in fact, to notice that he’s still using the Oklahoma City Thunder keychain/lanyard, which he brought along with him to a USA Basketball practice on Monday.

Thunder beat writer Anthony Slater shared photographic proof on his Twitter, writing:

It’s obviously not major, but it was only a matter of time before someone noticed. Unfortunately, we’re sure that it broke several Thunders fans hearts a little further.

Durant doesn’t even have to sweat to get himself a new team lanyard. He just needs to ask for one from his team, or drop a measly $9.99 for one from the NBA shop.

Shaunie O’Neil Slams Ayesha Curry For “NBA Is Rigged” Tweet (Video)

Shaunie O’Neil Slams Ayesha Curry For “NBA Is Rigged” Tweet (Video)

Ayesha Curry

Ayesha Curry’s infamous rage-fueled tweet that “the NBA is rigged”–after her husband Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors lost in Game 6 of the Finals–didn’t sit well with Shaq’s ex-wife, Shaunie O’Neil.

Shaunie, who is the executive producer of the reality show “Basketball Wives,” explained that the comment was not only plain stupid but also dumb and reckless.

“I feel like that job that her husband has supports a whole lot of people, and to say his job is rigged is sacrificing a whole lot of folks and their livelihood,” Shaunie explained.

“Was it rigged when your husband was winning or was it just rigged when he was losing? ‘Cause the tweet only came when he lost. So I just want to know was it rigged?” she added.

O’Neil said she was not trying to be mean but just keeping things real.

Kevin Durant Is Joining The Golden State Warriors

Kevin Durant Is Joining The Golden State Warriors

kevin durant

Here’s something that shocked NBA fans on Monday.

In a pretty shocking announcement via The Players’ Tribune, Kevin Durant revealed that he has experienced “by far the most challenging few weeks in my professional life” he has decided to leave the Oklahoma City Thunder for the Golden State Warriors.

Durant is now expected to sign a two-year deal worth $54.3 million with the new team, and will have a player option after the first year.

“The primary mandate I had for myself in making this decision was to have it based on the potential for my growth as a player — as that has always steered me in the right direction,” Durant explained. “But I am also at a point in my life where it is of equal importance to find an opportunity that encourages my evolution as a man: moving out of my comfort zone to a new city and community which offers the greatest potential for my contribution and personal growth.”

Durant in the same team as MVP Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson? Definitely looking forward to what the team will be showing off!

What can you say about Durant’s decision?

Ayesha Curry Takes Draymond Green’s Side, Mocks LeBron James With Tweet

Ayesha Curry Takes Draymond Green’s Side, Mocks LeBron James With Tweet

lebron james and draymond green game 4

MVP Stephen Curry’s number one fan, wife Ayesha Curry, has joined the ongoing war of words in the NBA world after mocking LeBron James with her tweet about taking the “high road” following his court feud with Draymond Green during Game 4 on Friday.

You may remember within the last three minutes of Game 4 last Friday (when Golden State won 108-97 over the Cavs) that LeBron had stepped over Green after knocking the Warriors forward down, which prompted an offended Green to take a swing with his arm and appear to make contact with James’ groin area. The action gave him a flagrant foul for making a “retaliatory swipe of his hand to the groin” of James and was suspended from playing in Game 5.

Then over the weekend, Warriors’ Klay Thompson went on an interview and talked about some trash talking that had been going on between Green and James. And when asked about James’ reaction in the court, Thompson said, “Obviously people have feelings. People’s feelings get hurt if they’re called a bad word. I guess his feelings just got hurt.”

James only laughed at Klay’s comments, adding, “My goodness. I’m not going to comment on what Klay said, because I know where it can go from this sit-in. It’s so hard to take the high road. I’ve been doing it for 13 years. It’s so hard to continue to do it, and I’m going to do it again.”

And this is where Mrs. Curry heated up the feud by posting on Twitter:

One thing’s for sure: the finals are definitely heating up and Game 5 just can’t get here sooner.

What do you think of Ayesha’s tweet?

Former NBA Player And 76ers Coach Sean Rooks Dies Hours After Knicks Meeting

Former NBA Player And 76ers Coach Sean Rooks Dies Hours After Knicks Meeting

sean rooks

Just hours after interviewing for an assistant coaching job with the New York Knicks on Tuesday, former NBA center and 76ers assistant coach Sean Rooks collapsed and died in a Philadelphia restaurant. The cause of death is unknown.

“It is with deep sadness and overwhelming grief that we mourn the sudden loss of my son, Sean,” his mother, Deborah Brown, said in a statement released by the 76ers that same night.

“Words simply cannot express the heartbreak and shock our entire organization is feeling over this loss,” 76ers co-managing owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer said about Rooks, “a beloved son, father and friend.”

“We are shocked and terribly saddened by the news of the death of Sean Rooks,”  Lakers President and Governor Jeanie Buss said in a statement. “During his time with the Lakers he was a true professional and was a favorite among teammates, coaches and staff. Sean was a friendly guy that everyone loved having around.”

Shaquille O’Neill, for whom Rooks had served as backup center during their time together with the Lakers, was one of the many who paid tribute to his former teammate on Twitter. Shaq shared a photo of him carrying Rooks and captioned it, “Rest In Heaven My Friend!”

Rooks played 12 years in the NBA, including three seasons each with the Lakers (from 1996 to 1999) and Clippers (2000 to 2003).

Kevin Durant To Receive “Hero Award” For Helping Paramedics

Kevin Durant To Receive “Hero Award” For Helping Paramedics

Kevin Durant, basketball star and hero of the community?

News has it that the Thunder forward actually helped out the Oklahoma Emergency Medical Services Authority by using his own Ferrari’s flashers to help clear the roads for an ambulance and navigate through the traffic over the weekend.

The EMSA told TMZ, “Kevin’s actions are exactly how we hope citizens help paramedics reach their calls for emergencies. He is a great example of doing his part to help those in need, and he handled it with such modesty.”

They hope to be able to give Durant the coveted “Everyday Hero” award–which is usually only given 4 times a year–as soon as possible, amid his busy ballin’ schedule.

Good job, Kevin!

LeBron James On Steph Curry’s NBA MVP Award: “He Definitely Deserved It”

LeBron James On Steph Curry’s NBA MVP Award: “He Definitely Deserved It”

lebron james shoves steph curry

Before Steph Curry won his unanimous and second consecutive NBA MVP honors on Wednesday, veteran star LeBron James was considered to be in the running for it. Then again, after seeing Curry’s clearly astounding numbers, the Golden State Warriors point guard proved to be more deserving.

James, who finished third behind the San Antonio Spurs’ Kawhi Leonard, praised Curry and told reporters, “I think he definitely deserved it. Look at Steph’s numbers. He averaged 30, he led the league in steals, he was 90-50-40 and they won 73 (games). Do you have any debate over that, really, when it comes to that award?”

Afterwards, LeBron questioned the interpretation of the coveted award, like the all the rest of us have. Does the award go to the most valuable player in a team, or to the league’s overall best player?

“But when you talk about most ‘valuable’ then you can have a different conversation, so, take nothing away from him, he’s definitely deserving of that award, for sure.” LeBron analyzed. “If you do it by a year-to-year basis, I think sometimes the word ‘valuable’ or best player of the year, you can have different results.”

We couldn’t agree more.

How Nike Lost Stephen Curry To Underarmour With Failed Presentation

How Nike Lost Stephen Curry To Underarmour With Failed Presentation

steph curry with his under armour shoes

Even with their ultra-modern self-lacing sneakers coming out, Nike is in a really close fight with rival brand, Under Armour, in achieving sportswear supremacy. And it appears that it boils down to the mistake they made–when they lost Stephen Curry a few years ago.

What many may not know is that the Golden State Warriors MVP used to be with Nike, but ended up feeling that he was clearly not in their best interests–at least not as much as other NBA stars. In a recent tell-all by ESPN’s Ethan Strauss, it all went down when Steph and his father Dell were in a pitch meeting with the sneaker giant. The first red flag was when one Nike official accidentally addressed Stephen as “Steph-on.”

“I heard some people pronounce his name wrong before,” says Dell Curry. “I wasn’t surprised. I was surprised that I didn’t get a correction.”

But that wasn’t all. There was also a PowerPoint slide that featured Kevin Durant’s name, which was probably (and hopefully) left on by accident after reusing repurposed materials. Dell says he decided to “keep a poker face,” but he “stopped paying attention after that.”

After also realizing that Nike was placing Curry in a category below stars like LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant, they decided to leave Nike. After which, Under Armour offered a contract worth almost $4 million a year–an offer that beat Nike’s. He now has several signature shoes under the brand.

As for Under Armour coming after Nike with Curry in the front, former sports-marketing executive and former Nike affiliate Sonny Vaccaro tells Strauss, “This is Nike’s biggest fear. They can’t overcome this in the shoe business. This is going to be detrimental to them. Psychologically.”

Kanye West Might Be Redesigning LA Clippers Mascot

Kanye West Might Be Redesigning LA Clippers Mascot

LA Clippers mascot chuck the condor

The new LA Clippers mascot also didn’t sit well with rapper, Kanye West.

You may remember that last month, Chuck the Condor made his debut with a dunk and pretty much disappointed every Clippers fan. Now we probably don’t pay attention to 90% of what Yeezy says, but this time we’re listening when he practically begged Clips owner Steve Ballmer on Twitter over the weekend to let him redesign the mascot.

It seems Ballmer was listening too, because he tweeted back and said that he’s open to discussing it. Kanye responded–and with a name drop, no less–by saying, “%1000 Steve Ballmer. Let’s meet this week if you have time. I was hanging with Chris Paul last night.”

What do you think of this idea?

Kobe Bryant Dislocates Finger During Game (Video)

Kobe Bryant Dislocates Finger During Game (Video)

kobe bryant injures finger

If Kobe Bryant’s infamous ankle injury is any indication, it seems the NBA legend has high tolerance for pain.

Over the weekend, news (shock) spread after Bryant suffered yet another injury on Friday night while playing against the San Antonio Spurs in LA, this time being his middle finger being popped out of its joint. Ouch. Still, he didn’t let it ruin his gameplay. With the help of his trainer Gary Vitti, his finger was given the classic 1-2-3 tug and put back to its proper place, and he ran back to the court. Double ouch.

Even with his ability to play again, the Lakers still ended up losing 119-113–but probably not because of the finger.
