Former NBA Player And 76ers Coach Sean Rooks Dies Hours After Knicks Meeting

Just hours after interviewing for an assistant coaching job with the New York Knicks on Tuesday, former NBA center and 76ers assistant coach Sean Rooks collapsed and died in a Philadelphia restaurant. The cause of death is unknown.

“It is with deep sadness and overwhelming grief that we mourn the sudden loss of my son, Sean,” his mother, Deborah Brown, said in a statement released by the 76ers that same night.

“Words simply cannot express the heartbreak and shock our entire organization is feeling over this loss,” 76ers co-managing owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer said about Rooks, “a beloved son, father and friend.”

“We are shocked and terribly saddened by the news of the death of Sean Rooks,”  Lakers President and Governor Jeanie Buss said in a statement. “During his time with the Lakers he was a true professional and was a favorite among teammates, coaches and staff. Sean was a friendly guy that everyone loved having around.”

Shaquille O’Neill, for whom Rooks had served as backup center during their time together with the Lakers, was one of the many who paid tribute to his former teammate on Twitter. Shaq shared a photo of him carrying Rooks and captioned it, “Rest In Heaven My Friend!”

Rooks played 12 years in the NBA, including three seasons each with the Lakers (from 1996 to 1999) and Clippers (2000 to 2003).

Hardwood From Kobe Bryant’s Last Game Up For Auction

Hardwood From Kobe Bryant’s Last Game Up For Auction

kobe bryant last game

We all know Kobe Bryant’s last game at the Staples Center was legendary. So, the Lakers are giving every huge—and filthy rich—fanatics a chance to have an actual part of that game.

We’re talking about the 3 panels of the custom #8 on the court when the Black Mamba had scored 60 points. The hardwood is going up for auction as a single item, with the starting bid at $10,000.

Not only that, the proceeds from the sale will benefit the team’s Lakers Youth Foundation for unprivileged kids, so it’s basically a win-win situation.

The #24 will also be immortalized, but as an artwork in the new Lakers practice facility.

Former Bulls, Lakers Player Jack Haley Dies

Former Bulls, Lakers Player Jack Haley Dies

Basketball player Jack Haley

Jack Haley, a member of the record-setting Bulls back in 1996, has died on Monday at the Los Alamitos Medical Center in California. According to his family, it was because of a long battle with heart disease.

Some of you may know the 51-year-old 6-foot-10 forward-center from his nine seasons in the NBA. He played for the Chicago Bulls, New Jersey Nets, Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs during his nine season career, averaged 3.5 points and 2.7 rebounds. Although, he was MIA during the ’92-’93 season because of an injury.

Prior to being drafted by the Bulls as the 97th pick overall in 1987 out of UCLA, he played in Spain and was also part of the Boston Bruins team during the NIT championship in 1985.

Haley was known as Bulls star Dennis Rodman’s friend and, arguably, his baby sitter. Haley jokingly defended himself to the Chicago Tribune at the time, ”I’ve felt it’s important to be a part of the greatest team in history and to get out and show people I’m not Dennis’ babysitter. I never have been. I’ve been a basketball player from Day One.”

After hearing the news, Rodman posted a Twitter photo of Haley kissing him on the cheek, with the caption, ”RIP to my brother Jack Haley. Sending love to his family.” He later reposted the photo with the comment, “It was like the movie 2 men and a baby when we would have his kids with us! Loved Jack Haley like a brother. #RIP

Former Bulls star Scottie Pippen also tweeted, ”Very sorry to hear my old teammate, Jack Haley, has passed away. Great guy who I stayed in touch with over the years. RIP.”

Kentucky coach John Calipari, for whom Haley worked as an assistant for the Nets following his retirement, shared on Twitter, ”Jack was one of the most positive, upbeat guys I’ve ever been around. He was on that unbelievable 1996 championship team in Chicago. Sad day.”

As for his family, they also had beautiful words about the late athlete. They said in a statement on Tuesday through the Lakers, ”He cherished every moment and gave 100 percent whether on or off the court. And more than anything, Jack dearly loved his family. We are humbled and grateful for the outpouring of love, support, and prayers from around the country.”

Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak added that Haley was ”a hard worker and always very professional.” ”He was proud to wear the Lakers uniform, and he was always a credit to our organization and the Lakers family,” Kupchak explained.

Fellow Bulls player Stacey King also tweeted, “So sorry to hear of the passing of my guy and former Bulls teammate Jack Haley. He was one of my favorite teammates when I came to Chicago.”

Haley is survived by his sons Jack Jr. and Jeff, his mother Jeanette, brother Tim, sister Sondra and ex-wife Stacey.

Steve Nash Hilariously Tells Off Hater On Twitter To Watch His Mouth “Or Temecula”

Steve Nash Hilariously Tells Off Hater On Twitter To Watch His Mouth “Or Temecula”

Steve Nash on red carpet

Steve Nash may have angered Lakers fans for refusing to retire for years now, but he made a couple of Twitter followers laugh when he told off one of his haters recently.

After a long hiatus, the basketball star decided to come back on Twitter to live-tweet the Barcelona/Man City soccer match on Tuesday. And because he basically put himself back in the spotlight, haters soon started tweeting him tres harsh words.

One particular hater started tweeting out profanities and trash talked the point guard with things like:

“YEah right your trash and washed up. You got injured in the offseason your bones are made of glass.”

“Sorry ass excuse for a PG.”

“You hurt your back caring bag not playing ball. Your Frail you and Bynum are on the same list.”

Nash responded hilariously, saying:

“I’m the hardest 41 yr old you know Brodie. Watch your mouth or temecula”

For those who have no idea what he meant, let us take you back to last Christmas when another Laker fan challenged someone on Twitter after criticizing Kobe Bryant. The critic dared the fan to drive all the way to Tenacula in California for a fight but little did the tough guy fan know that the critic was actually far away in Arizona, where he was celebrating Christmas with his family.

The result of Nash’s little comeback? Well, it did keep his hater off Twitter for a while after the latter realized that his mentions have been flooded.

Well, what do you know, Nash still wins.

Nick Young Gets Brand New Car From GF Iggy Azalea For Christmas

Nick Young Gets Brand New Car From GF Iggy Azalea For Christmas

Nick Young driving his new car from Iggy Azalea

It’s not bad being Nick Young!

Three days before Christmas, the Lakers shooting guard received a pretty cool brand new classic car from his very own Santa—a blue 1962 Chevy Impala from girlfriend Iggy Azalea.

The pop star even delivered the ride personally outside his team’s practice facility, perhaps so he can also show it off to his envious teammates.

According to sources, the car is worth around $100K and is just a teensy part of what Iggy is raking in these days. Still, Swaggy P himself admits that his ladylove “won” in the gift-giving game this year.

What do you think of the car?

Jeremy Lin Cheered Himself Up With McFlurry After Lakers Loss

Jeremy Lin Cheered Himself Up With McFlurry After Lakers Loss

jeremy lin

The Lakers have not been doing as well as they’ve been hoping this NBA season, with recent losses to the Dallas Mavericks and Denver Nuggets this week.

You may remember that Jeremy Lin was in good spirits after ending their losing streak with wins against the Charlotte Hornets and the Atlanta Hawks, despite some power struggle with veteran teammate Kobe Bryant.

But with the team being pushed back down, the towering Asian basketball star has undoubtedly been feeling a little low.

His choice of snack to ease the pain? A McFlurry from McDonalds.

Lin was at the annual Lakers Thanksgiving celebration this week and handing out turkeys to the less fortunate when he admitted to having some ice cream following the loss.

Hope he remembers that food ain’t love… or victory. Besides, he shouldn’t be gaining much weight with more games coming up!

Watch his brief interview below:

Does Shaquille O’Neal Feel Sorry For Kobe Bryant Amid Lakers’ Losing Streak?

Does Shaquille O’Neal Feel Sorry For Kobe Bryant Amid Lakers’ Losing Streak?

Hate to think it but Shaquille O’Neal may be feeling a tad bit sorry for the aging Kobe Bryant amid the Lakers’ bothersome losing streak this season.

The rivaling veterans, who once won three straight NBA titles together with the Lakers before Shaq retired, were spotted sharing a handshake and an embrace right before the Lakers lost to Golden State over the weekend.

If you recall, Kobe had been working hard, most recently during the match against the Warriors where his team had trailed behind by a whopping 36 points and ultimately finished with 115 points (Golden State won with 136).

Despite scoring as much as 44 points, his highest this season, Kobe knows it will take a whole lot more to bounce back from their four losses in a row.

“I think that just says that he’s still Kobe and he can get 44,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr admitted. “As long as it doesn’t hurt us too much and the game’s going our way, then we’re going to play him straight up. Kobe’s Kobe, and he’s always going to score — no matter how old he is. I’m sure it’s tough on him, but he’s such a competitor.”

Lakers Nab First Win Of NBA Season

Lakers Nab First Win Of NBA Season

The Los Angeles Lakers finally won for the first time since the start of the season, and it’s mainly thanks to Kobe Bryant and Jeremy Lin. But according to the two superstars, they have a long way to go.

The win against the Charlotte Hornets on Sunday is particularly notable (and long overdue) as their 0-5 start was the worst since their move to Los Angeles and the team hadn’t lost that much to open a season since they lost their first seven about 57 years ago.

Lin, who was traded to the Lakers by the Houston Rockets just last July, is pretty proud of the turn.

“The one thing about today is we were talking, we were engaged, we were moving, we were trying to make it difficult (for Charlotte).” Lin said. “We were just trying to make them take some tough jump shots.”

At the same time, Lin notes his and Bryant’s efforts in adjusting to each other on the court.

“It’s just a process. [Kobe]’s got to learn to continue to trust me and I have to learn to trust him and what that looks like in terms of when to give the ball to the other person,” he explains. “It’s not like we’re both coming in inherently trying to be selfish. We both want it to work, we just have to figure out how and today was a step in the right direction.”

As for Bryant, who has won five times as NBA champion with the Lakers, is more challenged than ever now that they’re facing games against Memphis, New Orleans and San Antonio in the coming week.

“You’ve got to start somewhere,” he said. The task just gets harder and harder.”

Lin said in agreement, “We’ve got to play harder every night. If we play harder every night, we have a chance.”

Kobe Bryant Made Me Go To Practice Hours Early For 1-On-1, Says Ex-Lakers Player

Kobe Bryant Made Me Go To Practice Hours Early For 1-On-1, Says Ex-Lakers Player

Once upon a time in 2009, there was a rookie in the Los Angeles Lakers training camp named Tony Gaffney… and he was somewhat close to superstar, Kobe Bryant.

He’s not sure if he should feel lucky about their then-relationship, though.

In a recent interview with Basketball Insiders, Gaffney revealed that Kobe picked him as his one-on-one guinea pig for private ball practice. Kobe would reportedly tell him, “We’re gonna start playing one-on-one. I heard you’re a defensive lockdown player. So, lock me down.”

“Obviously easier said than done,” Gaffney said, laughing. “But for about three weeks in a row, I was forced to show up hours before practice to play one-on-one against Kobe.”

Not only that, Gaffney said Bryant would invent rules where he could only dribble and score with his weak hand. There were also some days when he could only score inside the paint or outside it.

Gaffney added, “Oh, and I never got to play offense.’

Oh, Kobe. No wonder he’s dubbed as one of the most crazy competitive ball players ever.

Steve Nash to The Lakers

Steve Nash to The Lakers

Steve Nash to the Lakers.

It sounds good. However, he is older than Derek Fisher who was traded from the Lakers to Oklahoma City, which might raise some eyebrows. Nash is an incredible player, always has been, and plays like a young player. Let’s see how this plays out. The NBA Draft is fascinating this year.

If you have lived under a rock and don’t know Steve Nash is, check out this video from the start of his career.
