Simone Biles Explains Gymnastics Hiatus: “A Break Is Needed”

Five-time Olympic medalist Simone Biles is still adamant about taking a year-long break from competitive gymnastics.

The 19-year-old athlete from Boston, who brought home 4 golds after the recently concluded Rio Olympics, explains her reason for taking some much-needed time off on “Good Morning America” today:

“To travel and train, there’s just like no way I can do 100 percent so a break is needed.”

Just in time too, as she obviously has a lot on her plate. Since her win, she has met Beyonce and Kim Kardashian while presenting at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards. She was welcomed like “crazy” too when she came back to her hometown last month.

“You dream of these things for so long and then it happens and you’re like, ‘Oh, what else do I want now?’” she said.

Aside from touring the country with some of her fellow “Final Five” gold medalist teammates for the 2016 Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions, she’s also writing her first autobiography, “Courage to Soar,” which is set to be released in November.

“I’m super-excited,” Biles said of the book. “It’s just about my life so that they hear it from me.”

Gymnastics Coach Saves Student From Falling Head First In Viral Video

gymnast falls, caught by coach

Incredible!

In a video that has gone viral over the weekend (despite being shared on YouTube a week ago), a gymnastics coach saves a young gymnast from falling on the mat head first during a routine for a competition.

It happened when an 11-year-old competitor named Caidance, a student at the Gym Magic Gymnastics Club in Canada, was warming up on uneven bars for the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Ontario Championships. She slipped and her coach, Vitali Laurentide, was observing and later made a split-second move to catch the student.

Gym Magic Gymnastics posted on their Facebook page moments after, “Our amazing coach Vitali won an award at Provinicals too for Best Catch Ever! We are thankful to have such great coaches at Gym Magic!”

Caidence is believed to have placed 6th on the bars in her age division.

See just how close Caidance’s head was to the mat before the coach flipped them both over to avoid dangerous head and neck impact:
