You may remember that before 2015 ended, UFC ultimate fighter Ronda Rousey shocked everyone when she was defeated by Holly Holms.

This year, we were even more shocked after hearing from Rousey herself how she actually reacted to her devastating loss. In an emotional interview with Ellen DeGeneres, the fighter said, “Honestly … I was sitting in the corner and was like, ‘What am I anymore if I’m not this?’ I was literally sitting there thinking about killing myself.”

Rousey’s father did also commit suicide when she was 8, making it an existential crisis. It was her devotion to her boyfriend, UFC fighter Travis Browne, that saved her.

“I looked up at him and I was just like, ‘I need to have his babies. I need to stay alive.'”

Now, 34-year-old Holly Holm is responding to the suicidal comments made by Rousey. She admitted, “There’s a lot of things around that. When I heard that she said that, for me it’s one of those things it’s like, ‘How do I respond to that?”

“I don’t want to say I’m sorry because I think on a competitive level for me, if somebody was to say they’re sorry after beating me, it’s like, ‘No, I’m a competitor.’ I’m not a charity case.” Holm added, “I don’t want to say that I’m glad that she felt that way and I don’t want to say, ‘Oh I’m so sorry.’ It’s something I think that you have to dig through on your own. In the long run, she’ll be stronger mentally from it.”
